Hard Coal: Portrait of Brotherhood

Joel Anderson
July 29-September 19, 2014

Joel Anderson grew up in a small central-Pennsylvania town, his inspiration for his showHard Coal: Portrait of Brotherhood. Shot in the ramshackle mines near his home town,Hard Coal depicts the intricate brotherhood of coal miners – going back generations and deeply woven into their community.

“This has become an ongoing project for me,” Anderson explains. “I photograph as mines close and new ones open, as miners get injured or move on, and as they continue their culture in a changing world.”
