Expressions of Courage

"Survivor" by Dillon Murphy, 2016 First Place

Courage.  The ability to do something frightening.  Showing strength in the face of pain or grief.  Living with disease.  Overcoming disability.  Standing up for what’s right.  Leading change.

We invite you to explore the various definitions of courage in the 5th annual Expressions of Courage competition.  This portrait exhibition was originally inspired by the New Castle YMCA’s Salute to Courage dinner and likewise recognizes individuals who have overcome their fears to better themselves and/or their community.

Examples can be anywhere.  At home.  At work.  In your school or in your neighborhood.  Share them with us in the form of a black-and-white portrait accompanied by a short narrative describing the individual and his/her act(s) of courage. Our ‘gallery of heroes’ will be displayed at The Confluence in downtown New Castle, November 2, 2017-January 4, 2018.  Cash prizes will be awarded to the top entries.

Photographers of any age and skill level living within a 100-mile radius of New Castle, PA are invited to apply for the 5th Annual Expressions of Courage photography competition.  Inspired by the annual New Castle YMCA’s Salute to Courage dinner, the competition recognizes individuals who have demonstrated courage in their convictions to improve themselves and/or their community.  It takes courage to recover from an accident, illness or injury; to live with a disability; to demonstrate acts of heroism; or to influence political, economic or social change for the common good in your school, neighborhood or city.

Entries must therefore depict an individual who has demonstrated at least one of these traits and be accompanied by a short narrative describing his/her act(s) of courage. Prizes will be awarded based on the technical, aesthetic and narrative qualities of each entry. Cash prizes are as follows: 1st place - $250, 2nd place - $150, 3rd place - $75.  The jury panel may additionally select up to six merit awards at $25 each.

For consistency of presentation, all entries must be black and white, printed to 11”x14” and matted with a white mat to 16” x 20”.  The Hoyt will provide frames for the duration of the exhibition.  Works will be returned to the artist matted.

The exhibition will take place in the galleries of The Confluence in downtown New Castle, November 2, 2017-January 4, 2018.  Registration day is Saturday, October 14, 11-4 at Arts & Education at the Hoyt.
