Arts on the Riverwalk Brings the Best in Local Entertainment

When the Hoyt decided to take on the Arts on the Riverwalk festival in 2014, it was with the intent of contributing to the vitality of downtown while fulfilling its mission to expand and enrich the life of the community through participation in the arts.

With four stages of entertainment, an artist’s market, free workshops, and tent full of make-and-take activities for all ages, the festival is certainly offering plenty of opportunities to participate as both a spectator and as an artist.

This year, Arts on the Riverwalk is introducing the People’s Choice awards, an opportunity for spectators to vote for their favorite visual and performing artist.  One prize will be awarded in each category September 9, the day of the festival.

The Local Art Competition takes place annually in The Confluence gallery.  While a panel of jurors is awarding 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes, the public has the opportunity to cast a vote through Facebook by“liking” their favorite image. The winner will receive a cash prize. Voting opens September 4 and continues through the 9th. The winner with the most likes will be announced on The Confluence stage at 5:15 p.m.

Vocalists, dancers, musicians and actors will also be competing for People’s Choice on side stages throughout the festival area. Votes can be cast in each location throughout the day until 8 p.m.  Eligible groups include: Mandi's Dance Studio, Harmony Hot Haus, Wing & Prayer Pittsburgh Players, Renova Music Festival, Free Wheelin, TNT Acoustics, James Tobin, the SRU dance groups, Castle Country Cloggers, Katie Joy, New Castle Playhouse Mini Stars, New Castle Lyric Opera and Tone Float. The winner will receive a $500 check and be announced on the Main Stage at 9 pm.

Other participants worth mentioning are The OH WOW! Children’s Science Center, Spiny from the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, 3-D chalk artist Darrean Brown and regional bands Coleville, Swear, The Reunion Band, and US4Now.
